Metallic Jacquard: The Power of Surface with Malachite and Bronze

By Natalie Kolyozyan

What defines a garment at first glance is not always its cut. Sometimes the fabric redraws the silhouette through its relationship with light. Metallic jacquard is one of the clearest examples of this, especially in strong-shouldered blazers and full trousers. In Natalie Kolyozyan's Relief AW26 collection, the designs named Malachite and Bronze show how a surface can add a separate dimension to a piece: a green metallic reflection in one, the closeness of black and copper tones in the other.

Where does the visual power of jacquard come from?

Thinking of jacquard only as a motif or a shine is not enough. The areas where light looks brighter or softer on the surface of a garment also change how the piece reads from a distance. Relief's collection story links its metallic jacquards to the idea of relief carving, while the product descriptions define specific pieces as metallic jacquard. The two descriptions sit side by side in describing the collection's language of surface, but they do not mean that every piece has exactly the same textile construction.

For Relief, which draws on Istanbul's carved stone, this relationship matters. In a relief, light reveals the hollows and raised areas; in the same way, jacquard can show the shoulder line of a blazer or the movement of a wide-leg trouser differently under the light. The effect described here is visual. For fibre content, weaving method and technical composition, refer to the verified product details.

Malachite: green metallic surface and defined form

The Malachite Blazer is described as a broad-shouldered blazer in green metallic jacquard. Its shoulder line, which builds a strong frame for the upper body, becomes even more defined through the shine of the surface. In this piece, volume is felt not only in the cut but in the visible texture of the garment. View product: Malachite Blazer

From the same family, the Malachite Trousers have a barrel leg. The way the cut opens along the leg and gathers in again visually strengthens the curve of the leg when combined with the metallic surface. The two pieces appear together in Look 9, showing how a single fabric world can build different volumes at both shoulder and leg. View product: Malachite Trousers

The Malachite family is not limited to a suit. The Malachite Bustier is also described as a bustier in green metallic jacquard. Using the same surface in different proportions across a blazer, trousers and a bustier gives meaning to the collection's naming system: a similar texture, reinterpreted in three different garment forms.

Bronze: the depth of black and copper

Against the vivid green of Malachite, the Bronze Blazer creates a darker effect with its black and copper metallic jacquard and broad shoulders. The combination of a black ground with copper tones gives the shoulder line a strong but far from flat surface. Because the design can look sharper or softer as the reflection changes, photographic light matters as much as styling with fabrics like this. View product: Bronze Blazer

From the same family, the Bronze Trousers are described as wide-leg trousers in black and copper metallic jacquard, and the Bronze Skirt as an asymmetric metallic jacquard skirt. All three are linked to Look 31, pointing to a shared design family. This does not prove that all three are worn together in a single look; rather, it suggests different lower pieces that can complete the jacket. View product: Bronze Trousers

Choosing between a barrel leg and a wide leg also changes the effect of the jacquard. The gathered line of the Malachite trousers gives the surface a sculptural movement, while the wide leg of the Bronze trousers creates a more uninterrupted flow. Similar materials do not have to produce the same language of proportion.

How to wear a metallic jacquard blazer

When you want a metallic jacquard blazer to be the focus of the look, choosing a quieter, matt surface underneath is a good start. A white cotton shirt or a top with simple lines can help keep the visual intensity of the jacquard in balance. The Marble Shirt from Relief is described as an oversized white cotton shirt with enamel buttons. Pairing it with a metallic blazer is a new styling suggestion, not a look from the collection.

A second approach is to keep the surface continuous on purpose. The Malachite blazer and Malachite trousers can be read together as different forms of the same green metallic world. Here the whole look creates a single focal point; the role of accessories is to complete the rhythm, not to compete with it.

A third option is to use metallic jacquard through a piece that moves. The Bronze wide-leg trousers or the asymmetric jacquard skirt can sit at the centre of a look with a quieter top. The surface effect then appears not only on the upper body, but in a lower silhouette that moves with every step.

Light matters as much as colour

Rather than following a mechanical list of colour pairings, it is more useful to see how a piece looks in different lights. The green of Malachite and the black and copper of Bronze offer a far more layered image than a plain fabric. A surface that looks dramatic in a studio photograph may read as calmer in daylight; for an accurate impression, rely on the brand's own product photographs.

In product photographs, look beyond the front view to the angles that show the shoulder line, the surface of the fabric and the movement of the trousers. Judging a metallic fabric only by its shine can push the line of the garment into the background. Relief's jacquard, however, is built on reading surface and form together.

From surface to silhouette

There is no single way to make metallic jacquard feel contemporary. In one look it can come forward through the strong shoulders of a blazer; in another it accompanies the volume of a trouser; in a third it brings out the movement of an asymmetric skirt. Malachite and Bronze make room to compare these options within the same collection.
